Frequently Asked Questions
Q: How do I set up a student account?
A: You will be prompted to set up a student account when you begin your first application to an OUS study abroad program. Simply click on the "Apply Online Now" button, which can be found at the bottom of the each page of OregonAbroad website.
Q: How long does it take to set up a student account?
A: Student accounts are created in only a few moments. The system will ask you to submit your name, email address and date of birth, and will then send you a log-in password by email. When you log-in for the first time, you will be asked to answer a few short questions to complete your basic profile. This should take no more than 3-5 minutes. Once you have done this, you can enter your application and start working!
Q: What does an OUS study abroad application include?
A: A completed OUS study abroad application includes:
- Application Form
- Application Essays
- Learning Agreement
- Recommendations (for most programs, two are required; some programs require more)
- Official transcripts from your current college/university
- Official transcripts from previous colleges/universities at which you earned over 12 credits
- $50 application fee
Q: Do I have to complete my application all at once?
A: No, you are able to enter and exit the system and work on individual application items as many times as you would like before the application deadline. To do this, simply "Save" the item you are working on and return to it when you are ready to complete it. Please note that if you "Submit" an application item, it is marked as complete (a check mark appears) and indicates to OUS that it is ready for review. Once you submit an application item you are no longer able to make changes or edits. If you mistakenly submit application items before they are ready for review, contact OUS staff.
Q: I am trying to complete my application and I am no longer able to access application materials and questionnaires. How do I get back in?
A: If you are no longer able to access your application materials, your application has been locked. Applications become locked once the application deadline has passed. Please contact the OUS Program Assistant for the region of your study abroad program.
Q: What happens once my application is complete?
A: As you complete or submit each item in your application, a check mark will appear next to it indicating that it has been submitted or received and is ready for review by OUS and your campus advisor. Materials submitted to the OUS office may take several days to be received and entered into the system. When you have completed your entire application, the system will notify OUS staff that it is ready for review.
Q: Can my campus advisor see my application?
A: Yes, your campus advisor is able to read your application in its entirety, and can communicate with OUS about your application via the online application system.
Q: I've forgotten my log-in name or password. How do I get back in?
A: On the log-in page, click the link that says "Forgot your password?" From here you will be directed to a password reset page. Enter the email address you used to create your student account and click "Reset Password." Your password is reset, and a temporary password is sent to your email account. Make sure to set a new password the next time you log-in.
Q: I've received automatic e-mails from "firstname.lastname@example.org." Who are they coming from?
A: Those e-mails are coming from the OUS central office, and some of them are automated. If you have questions about application submissions, billing, orientation or any other general program information, please contact the OUS Program Assistant . If you have site-specific questions, contact the appropriate OUS Program Assistant or Director for your program.
Q: Can I reach the Program Director through the online application?
A: All materials you submit via the system are accessible by your Program Director. If you would like to speak with your Program Director, you may contact him/her directly via email or phone. You can find contact information on our webpage.
Q: How do I submit my application form and application essays?
A: In the questionnaires box of your online application you will be prompted to submit these documents and will be given all necessary instructions. You can either upload your essays as attachments, or type them directly in text format into the boxes in the essays questionnaire. If you choose to upload them as attachments, you may use the space provided to include any additional notes or comments. All notes and comments will be reviewed as part of your application.
Q: How do I obtain permission to sign “Signature Documents” electronically?
In order to verify your required electronic signature and be able to sign and submit Signature Documents electronically, you must first complete the Signature Verification Form and mail it to the OUS International Programs Office along with a photocopy of your valid passport or current driver's license. This form is at the top of the Program Application page. You won't be able to electronically sign required documents and complete your application until OUS has received these items.
Q: How do my recommendations get submitted to OUS?
A: For most programs, you are required to submit two recommendations. They can either be two academic recommendations or one academic and one professional recommendation. The online system enables you to deliver your recommendation requests electronically (preferred) or by hand or mail. If you submit an electronic request, respondents will receive an e-mail that will allow them to submit recommendations directly to the online system. You may also print a form and provide this to your recommenders. Please be sure to provide them with the appropriate return information (we suggest that you give recommenders a stamped, addressed envelope). With each method, we encourage you to maintain an open line of communication and provide all needed information to your recommenders in advance (e.g., deadline and program information, submission information and address, your contact information, etc.). When a completed recommendation is received, a check mark will appear next to the recommender's name on your application page.
Q: Where do I send my application fee, transcripts, and signature verification documents?
A: All materials submissions should be mailed directly to the OUS International Programs Office located at:
OUS International Programs (Specify the program)
2900 SW Jefferson Way
Corvallis, Oregon 97331-1102
Your OUS application fee must be paid by personal check or money order (not cash).
Q: Is a Campus Interview required? If so, how do I complete it?
Yes. As part of your application, you must attend an interview (or interview meeting) on your home campus. Your home campus will contact you to set up this interview or interview meeting, but only after you’ve submitted ALL initial application materials (signature verification, application questionnaire, essays, recommendations, learning agreement, transcripts, and $50 application fee). We cannot determine whether you can be accepted to the program until we receive a report from your interviewer (or confirmation that you attended an interview meeting).
Q: Is a Language Evaluation required? If so, how do I complete it?
It depends upon the program. If a language evaluation is required, you will receive relevant instructions when you are “Advanced to Stage Two” of the application process. To obtain your language evaluation you will need to print out the “Language Evaluation Form” (under “Material Submissions”) and take it to your current or most recent language instructor. Please be prompt. If a language evaluation is required, we won’t be able to determine if you can be accepted to the program until we receive an evaluation form from your language instructor.
Q: Is the information I am submitting confidential? Who has access to this information?
A: Your application information will be stored on a secure server. The only people who will have access to your information will be you, your campus advisor, and OUS staff, including Program Directors and Assistants. We will share pertinent information with host site staff (e.g., Resident Directors) as well. Once you are accepted to the OUS program, we will collect information such as your address and emergency contact details which will be shared with billing staff at your university and at Oregon State University. We will respect all FERPA regulations and keep your information confidential within our system.
Q: I've decided I don't want to apply for the term/site I initially selected. How do I change my program choice or defer my application to a later term?
A: You will need to contact your Program Director or Program Assistant directly to do this. Also notify your campus advisor. Please do this as soon as you know of a change in your plans. Please be aware that once you have submitted your complete application (including application fee), your application fee is no longer refundable.
