ACADEMIC PROGRAM

At the Universidad San Francisco de Quito (USFQ), students with two or more years of college-level Spanish may focus on Spanish language and culture as well as take regular university coursework with Ecuadorian students. Students are encouraged to participate for an academic year, but semester options are available. Coursework is available in the social sciences, sciences and humanities. A dynamic institution, USFQ has garnered a reputation for academic quality, innovation, and a diverse curriculum. Students in a wide variety of disciplines will likely find coursework to fit their interests and degree plans.

Host University Description:

Located in a suburb of Quito, the main campus of USFQ provides a quiet haven from the hustle and bustle of urban Quito. Neoclassical buildings, courtyards and a Japanese teahouse provide a snapshot of the innovative and eclectic culture of the USFQ. Located about 40 minutes by bus from central Quito, the USFQ is home to about 2700 undergraduate and 125 graduate students. Because of its size and program structure, USFQ offers many opportunities for students to integrate into Ecuadorian academic life.

The USFQ is comprised of the following colleges: Administration for Development; Architecture; Communication and Contemporary Arts; Liberal Arts; Health Sciences; Biological Sciences and Environment; Agricultural Products and Nutrition; Science and Engineering; and Hospitality, Gastronomy and Tourism. The university operates on a semester calendar.

Registration and Credits:

Students participating in this program will be registered at their home university in Oregon and will receive home campus credits for courses taken at the Universidad San Francisco de Quito. Students’ course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at their home institutions. Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by their home university academic departments.

Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in the Ecuador program. Students wishing to earn major or minor credits for courses taken at Universidad San Francisco de Quito are strongly advised to be in frequent communication with their advisor to determine what’s possible.

Because of the nature of this program, courses and credits are applied after completion of the program.

Students at the UO and OSU may refer to course equivalency lists for courses that have been previously taken by program participants from those institutions. Students from other OUS institutions should consult with their international program advisors for information about equivalences on their campuses. Courses that do not appear on these equivalency sheets will need to be approved on your campus for credit.
