ACADEMIC PROGRAM

The Japanese Language and International Liberal Studies program at Waseda University offers students the opportunity to improve their Japanese language ability while at the same time completing a range of English language-based coursework.  In addition to intensive Japanese language classes, students can choose from a wide variety of courses taught in English, including regionally-focused courses in history, economics, literature, communications and political science, as well as general courses in biology, mathematics and business.

Students complete 6 hours per week of intensive Japanese language study and choose an additional 8 – 14 hours per week of subject area coursework.

A sample course list can be found here.

Waseda’s School of International Liberal Studies was founded in 2004.  The school offers a broad, multi-disciplinary range of courses, all of which are taught in English.  The school seeks to provide an internationalized liberal arts education to both Japanese students and other students from around the world.  Courses are taught by Japanese and international scholars, who are part of the Waseda faculty, as well as senior visiting faculty from well known universities around the world.

Registration and Credits:

Students participating in this program will be registered at their home university in Oregon and will receive home campus credits for courses taken at Waseda University.  Students’ course work will be reviewed and evaluated by appropriate academic departments at their home institutions.  Students must keep detailed records of course outlines, reading lists, exam results, and other work completed to facilitate accurate evaluation by their home university academic departments.
Students are advised to consult with their academic advisor about their plans to study in Japan on the Waseda program.  Students wishing to earn major or minor credits for courses taken at Waseda, are strongly advised to be in frequent communication with their academic advisor to determine what’s best for their plan of study.
Because of the nature of this program, courses and credits are applied after completion of the program.
