Innovation, Conservation & Design with Natural Resources: Insights from Scandinavia; Finland, Sweden and Denmark
August 21 – September 6, 2013
The OUS Scandinavia program allows students to experience, first-hand, the use of natural resources in sustainable design in the European region that pioneered this field – Scandinavia. During the 15 day program in Finland, Sweden and Denmark, the group will visit forest production sites, renewable energy facilities, and outstanding examples of the architectural and design use of natural resources. Meetings with guest speakers and interactive study will allow students to engage with the course material while developing an appreciation for the culture and heritage of this beautiful and welcoming part of the world.
Highlights of the program will include visits to:
• Sustainable forests to learn about managed growth and harvesting
• Renewable energy production sites, to gain insight into sustainable energy production
• IKEA to encounter the leaders in mass-produced furniture design
• Notable architectural examples of sustainable design such as: Sibelius Hall in Lahti Finland and the “Wood City” in Vaxjö, Sweden
Students will participate in series of pre-departure meetings to lay an academic foundation for the program, and to orient themselves to the experience. This program is led by two OSU College of Forestry faculty members, Chris Knowles and Eric Hansen, and is open to students from all OUS institutions. Undergraduate and graduate students will earn six credits.
