Through this Oregon University System (OUS) program at Deakin University, you may take classes at one of the campuses located in Melbourne, Geelong, or Warrnambool. You will be enrolled in university classes with Australian students and may choose classes from their regular catalog. Deakin offers coursework in a wide range of academic areas such as liberal arts, architecture, business, education, fisheries & wildlife, marine biology, mechanical engineering and construction engineering. Please refer to their online handbook at www.deakin.edu.au/handbook to research class options.
You may study for one semester or a full academic year. Depending on how many classes you take, you should receive approximately the same amount of credit for your time in Australia as you would during the same time period in Oregon. You will be registered at your home campus in the OUS (or at an OUS partner institution) and will receive credit from that institution. You should consult with your academic advisor and OUS Campus Contact to determine how coursework done in Australia will integrate with your home university curriculum requirements.
The OUS requires that you attend the day-long pre-departure orientation that covers the academic, administrative, financial and cultural information necessary for successful participation. Upon arrival in Australia, you will participate in an orientation at Deakin University designed to make your transition into Australian university life a smooth one.
Deakin University is located in the state of Victoria on the southeastern tip of Australia. You may choose to study at a big university in the city or a small campus in a regional town. All campuses are in the greater Melbourne region.
Melbourne: Population 3.6 million. This city is renowned for its music and cultural festivals, quality restaurants, entertainment, sports, and beautiful parks. The campus is located in the eastern suburbs about 40 minutes from the city centre. It is a good base from which to experience city life. The campus has a modern architectural style and an enrollment of 12,000 students.
Geelong: Population 200,000. Set on Corio Bay, Geelong boasts that it has one of the nicest lifestyles in Australia. It is a one hour train ride from Melbourne and 15 minutes from the beach. The Waurn Ponds campus is seven miles from the city centre, has an enrollment of 4,000, and offers a wide variety of undergraduate coursework. The Geelong Waterfront campus is located on Corio Bay in the city centre. The School of Architecture is housed in a beautifully renovated 1893 building. Close to 1,200 students are based at Deakin’s Waterfront campus.
Warrnambool: Population 28,000. Located at the end of the Great Ocean Road, this campus offers the experience of small town life. With about 1,000 students, the Warrnambool campus is a friendly, close-knit community. This campus has strengths in marine and freshwater science, fisheries management and aquaculture.
A wide range of housing options is available at the Deakin University locations. There are on-campus residence halls at all sites. There is also off-campus housing in the area.
Each Deakin University campus has an Education Abroad Office that provides a range of services for Study Abroad students, including assistance with arrival, orientation, enrollment in classes, housing, visa issues, and daily life
