The year-long Lyon exchange program is a unique opportunity to improve your French proficiency and expand your academic horizons through courses at any one of our four partner institutions. To ensure that you are properly prepared, the Oregon University System (OUS) requires that you attend a pre-departure orientation on May 19, 2007. This orientation will cover academic, administrative, financial and cultural information.
Upon arrival in Lyon, you will participate in a three-week orientation known as stage, an intensive cultural and linguistic course for which you will receive Oregon credit. During this time, your language skills will be evaluated to determine your placement level in the French language institute at Lyon II or Université Catholique or to confirm that you are ready for the direct exchange program. You can explore course offerings at the two French language institutes or the four participating universities at http://oregonabroad.ous.edu or through a list available in your campus international office. All classes are taught by faculty members of the university.
Depending on how many classes you take, you should receive approximately the same amount of credit for your year in Lyon as you would being a full-time student in Oregon. You will be registered at your home campus in the OUS (or at an OUS partner institution) and will receive credit from that institution. You should consult with your academic advisor and OUS Campus Contact to determine how coursework done in Lyon will integrate with your home campus curriculum requirements.
With over 100,000 students in the city, Lyon is an important educational center. Of the many institutions and Grandes Ecoles in Lyon, four universities participate in the Oregon exchange, providing opportunities for students with diverse majors to study in France: Lyon 1 (Claude Bernard), Lyon 2 (Lumière), Lyon 3 (Jean Moulin), and the Université Catholique.
Specialties of the universities include Humanities, Engineering, Medicine, Communications, Management/Economics, Political Science, Anthropology, Education, Urban Planning, Business, Law, Applied Languages, Philosophy, Exercise and Sports Science, and the Natural, Agricultural, and Social Sciences.
A number of different housing options are available during your year in Lyon. During the September stage, you will be housed in university dormitories, with a family or in an apartment you arranged for in advance. For the remainder of the year, you may be housed with a family, rent a room or studio apartment, share a larger apartment with a French or international roommate, or live in a dorm room.
While in Lyon, you will receive assistance in academic and personal matters from the Centre Oregon, staffed by a Resident Director, a program assistant, and a graduate teaching assistant. The Centre Oregon staff are responsible for assisting you with housing, providing academic advising, and facilitating your adjustment to the French university system and life in Lyon.
