Oregon students have long enjoyed studying German
in an intensive program in historic Tübingen,
a beautiful university town located along
the Neckar River in the southwestern German state of
Baden-Württemberg.

With 25,000 students among its 85,000 inhabitants,
Tübingen combines the vitality of a young and
cosmopolitan student community
with the charm of a
lovingly restored medieval town of half-timbered houses,
narrow alleyways, and steep gabled roofs.

Nestled in the Schwabian Alb, Tübingen is surrounded
by rolling countryside with hiking and cycling paths to
enjoy, castles to explore, and easy train connections to
both major cities and quaint villages.

Academic Program

This Oregon University System (OUS) spring term program gives you the opportunity to earn the equivalent of the third term of first-year German and all of second-year German in one semester of intensive language study in Tübingen. You may receive up to 24 undergraduate quarter credits in German language and culture, depending on your home institution.

The courses are taught by experienced bilingual instructors from the Tübingen Center for International Language Programs and are divided as follows: Grammar; Reading, Composition, and Conversation; and German Culture and Civilization. Integrated into the language and civilization program are excursions and field trips to southern Germany; group and individual student projects; evening activities, casual get-togethers and discussion groups; films, games, and dances; and tutors to assist with projects and conversation. Check with your Campus Contact for more information on course equivalencies. Some German departments may test students upon their return to determine their readiness to enter third-year German classes.

To ensure that you are properly prepared, the OUS requires that you attend a pre-departure orientation on Saturday, February 17, 2007, in Corvallis. This orientation will cover academic, administrative, financial and cultural information.

University of Tübingen

The University of Tübingen was founded in 1477 and has been home to several famous German scholars such as Hölderlin, Hegel, and Schelling. For more information, including a video of Tübingen, see http://www.uni-tuebingen.de/uni/qvr/e-30/m30-01.html.

Housing

During your stay in Tübingen, you will be housed in a single room in a university dormitory. Living in the student residence halls will provide you with an opportunity to immerse yourself in the German language and to meet students from around the world. Meals are available in inexpensive student cafeterias or can be prepared in the kitchens on each floor of the dorms.

On-site Support

The Oregon Study Center in Tübingen will assist you with academic and personal matters. The Resident Director will help to arrange housing, coordinate the intensive language program, and provide support as needed during your time abroad.

February 17, 2007 OUS orientation

Program Cost

The program costs for Spring 2008 are expected to be set by January 2008 and will reflect changes in the exchange rate. The cost for non-resident students will be higher.

The program fee includes:

‡ Academic and administrative fees
‡ Housing from April 2 to July 31
‡ Textbooks and teaching materials
‡ Excursions, field trips and other activities
‡ Health and accident insurance
‡ Orientation expenses
‡ On-site support

The program fee does not include airfare, meals in Tübingen, campus-based fees, and personal expenses such as local transportation, laundry, recreation (including continental travel), personal supplies, and incidental expenses. See http://oregonabroad.ous.edu for an estimate of comprehensive costs.

Funding

You can finance your spring in Germany in many ways. A listing of available local and national scholarships can be found at http://oregonabroad.ous.edu in addition to links to resources on your campus. Most forms of financial aid, such as grants or loans for which you are eligible on your home campus, may be applied to this program. Veteran’s benefits may also be applied.

Eligibility

The program is open to students from all fields of study. To be eligible, you must meet these minimum requirements by the time you participate:

‡ Two terms or one semester* of first-year German
‡ Cumulative GPA of 2.50 or above
‡ A high level of maturity, flexibility, and motivation

*Although the course content will not vary, some OUS institutions offer credits for this program suitable for more advanced students of German. Check with your Campus Contact for more details.

You may obtain an application form and instructions from the international office on your campus (see Campus Contacts) or at the following webpage: http://oregonabroad.ous.edu. Early application is encouraged.

Completion of this program with a B average may make you eligible for the OUS exchange program in Baden-Württemberg. Consult your Campus Contact for more information.

Internship Option

You can earn academic credit and add a professional dimension to your time in Germany by doing an OUS IE3 Global Internship following your study abroad program.

Internships are available year round in a wide variety of industries and organizations.
