From the Imperial Palace to the skyscrapers of Japan, Inc.,
Tokyo is home to more than 11 million people
and a dynamic confluence of commerce, culture, and industry.

Tucked among the city’s thriving financial, industrial and
entertainment districts are smaller neighborhoods
with narrow streets, wooden houses, and
handicraft shops, each with a flavor and history all its own.

Though Tokyo is densely populated,
it offers pockets of calm
in beautiful parks and gardens, quiet residential streets,
and tranquil temples and shrines.

Integrated Japanese Language Program at Aoyama Gakuin University

The Integrated Japanese Language Program at Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU) is a highly individualized study abroad experience. In addition to your Japanese language classes, you can enroll in any of the university’s regular courses with Japanese students and other international participants. Courses are available in English through the School of International Politics, Economics, and Business (SIPEB), or in English or Japanese at any of the University’s other departments. Students with proficiency in the language may take regular courses taught in Japanese. AGU provides a range of student support including mentors and advisors who will work closely with you to help you achieve your linguistic and academic goals.

Your study period at AGU coincides with the traditional Japanese academic calendar and begins with spring semester. The recommended length of the program is two semesters (April to July and September to February). You may apply for the full academic year or just the spring semester. Depending on how many classes you take, you should receive approximately the same amount of credit for your time in Japan as you would being a full-time student in Oregon. You will be registered at your home campus in the OUS (or at an OUS partner institution) and will receive credit from that institution. Consult with your academic advisor and Campus Contact to determine how coursework done in Japan will integrate with your home campus curriculum requirements.

The OUS requires that you attend the day-long pre-departure orientation that covers the academic, administrative, financial and cultural information necessary for successful participation.

Aoyama Gakuin University

Aoyama Gakuin University (AGU) is a private, coeducational institution with an enrollment of about 20,000 students on three campuses. Students on the OUS exchange program generally study at the Shibuya campus in Tokyo. AGU is a comprehensive university with programs in education, psychology, history, business, political science, economics, communication, and the physical sciences including physics, chemistry, biology, as well as electrical, mechanical and systems engineering. The AGU website is http://www.aoyama.ac.jp/en.

Housing

Housing is arranged by the AGU International Exchange Center in university-affiliated dormitories. Unlike many study abroad programs in Asia where students reside in international or foreign student dormitories, at AGU you will live in Japanese student dorms beside your classmates. Meals are taken on campus or in local restaurants.

On-site Support

You will be assisted through the application and orientation process by staff of the OUS International Programs Office working in conjunction with your university’s Campus Contact and the staff of Aoyama Gakuin University. Once you arrive in Tokyo, you’ll participate in an on-site orientation at AGU and will work with AGU faculty, student mentors and advisors as well as the AGU International Exchange Center and OUS staff in Japan.
