From the Imperial Palace to the skyscrapers of Japan, Inc., Tokyo is home
to more than 11 million people and a dynamic confluence
of commerce, culture, and industry.

Tucked among the city’s thriving financial, industrial
and entertainment districts are smaller neighborhoods
with narrow streets, wooden houses, and
handicraft shops, each with a flavor and history all its own.

Though Tokyo is densely populated, it offers pockets of calm
in beautiful parks and gardens, quiet residential streets, and
tranquil temples and shrines. Tokyo provides a
rich and exciting learning environment.

Japanese Language and International Liberal Studies at Waseda University

The Japanese Language and International Liberal Studies program at Waseda University offers you the opportunity to improve your Japanese language ability while at the same time completing a range of English language-based coursework to fulfill required and elective credits at your home institution. In addition to intensive Japanese language classes, you can choose from a wide variety of courses taught in English, including regionally-focused courses in history, economics, literature, communications and political science as well as general courses in biology, mathematics and business.

Depending on how many classes you take, you should receive approximately the same amount of credit for your time in Japan as you would being a full-time student in Oregon. You will be registered at your home campus in the OUS and will receive credit from that institution. Consult with your academic advisor and Campus Contact to determine how coursework done in Japan will integrate with your home campus curriculum requirements.

The OUS requires that you attend the day-long pre-departure orientation that covers the academic, administrative, financial and cultural information necessary for successful participation

Waseda University

Since 1882, Waseda University has been one of Japan’s premier private universities. Now, with over 47,000 students at its three main campuses, Waseda has maintained its strong academic reputation. Oregon students attend courses at the Waseda University’s School for International Liberal Studies with Japanese students and international students from other U.S., European and Asian universities. Outside of class, students are encouraged to join social and sports clubs, a mainstay of the Japanese university experience. To compliment the students’ academic program, the Oregon Study Center at Waseda and the School for International Liberal Studies also provide optional trips to sites of interest in Tokyo and Japan. The Waseda University website is http://www.waseda.ac.jp/cie/international.html.

Housing

Living with a Japanese host family is the best way to gain exposure to daily life in Japan as well as improve and develop Japanese language skills. Many of our host families have been welcoming Oregon students into their homes for years. Host families are carefully selected and are in frequent communication with the OUS Program Associate. Commuting is a way of life in Tokyo and students are provided with a transportation pass as part of the program cost. While this is primarily a homestay program, limited dormitory spaces may be available in special circumstances.

On-site Support

While in Tokyo, you will receive assistance from the OUS full-time resident Program Associate as well as the staff of Waseda’s Center for International Education. In addition, an OUS faculty member teaches in the School for International Liberal Studies and serves as the program’s Resident Director during the fall and/or spring semesters.
