The Oregon University System offers two distinct program options at Payap University: International College or Thai and Southeast Asian Studies.
International College: Payap University’s International College offers an international curriculum designed to give students the practical and analytical skills necessary for successful international careers in the private or public sector. You may choose from courses in Thai Language, Computer Information Systems, International Business Management, and International Hospitality Management. Courses are taught in English by a diverse international faculty.
Thai and Southeast Asian Studies Program: This certificate program is a one or two semester program for students interested in becoming proficient in the Thai language and knowledgable about Thai and SE Asian culture. It offers a well-developed language curriculum, required and elective courses in a wide range of disciplines (history, anthropology, the arts, religion, political science), and extensive field trips, excursions, and cultural activities.
Depending on how many courses you take, you should receive approximately the same number of credits for your program in Chiang Mai as you would being a full-time student in Oregon. (Note: due to academic calendar differences between the OUS term system and Payap University’s semester system, winter/spring term students must be flexible in their course selection to maintain full-time status.) You will be registered at your home campus in the OUS (or at an OUS partner institution) and will receive credit from that institution. Consult with your academic advisor and Campus Contact to determine how coursework done in Thailand will integrate with your home campus curriculum requirements.
The OUS requires that you attend the day-long pre-departure orientation that covers the academic, administrative, financial and cultural information necessary for successful participation.
Recognized in 1974 by the Ministry of University Affairs as Thailand’s first private university, Payap University has a heritage that traces back to 1888 as a missionary school founded for young Thais. Since 1974, Payap has grown in size and sophistication adding courses and degree programs at both the undergraduate and graduate levels. With approximately 9,000 students, Payap is regarded as one of Thailand’s top-ranked private universities. The Payap University website is http://thaistudies.payap.ac.th.
The Payap University International Office arranges housing on or near campus. You will be required to live in university- provided housing during your first semester on the program. Meals are taken on campus or in local restaurants.
You will be assisted through the application and orientation process by staff of the OUS International Programs Office working in conjunction with your university’s Campus Contact and staff of Payap University. The Payap University International Office will provide you support once the program begins in Chiang Mai.
